Gilded Elegance: Enhancing Soft Pastels with Gold Leaf

So I've delved into a captivating technique that has utterly transformed my pastel artworks: the delicate use of gold and silver leaf. This marriage of soft pastel hues with the opulent shimmer of precious metals has unlocked a world of possibilities, infusing my compositions with a timeless charm and sophistication.

Materials Needed:

• Soft pastels, pastel pencils

• Gold leaf sheets

• Adhesive (gold leaf glue)

• Soft brushes

• Tweezers
  

Step 1: Prepare Your Pastel Artwork: Depending on the complexity of your artwork, you may choose to either start by finishing the artwork and then applying the gold leaf, or, if your piece contains intricate details, it may be better to apply the gold leaf first.

Step 2: Apply Gilding Size: Using a soft brush, apply a thin, even layer of glue to the areas where you want to add gold leaf.

Step 3: Wait for Tackiness: Allow the glue to reach the tacky stage. This typically takes around 15-20 minutes. Test by lightly tapping the surface with your knuckle; it should feel sticky but not wet.

Step 4: Gently Place Gold Leaf: Using tweezers, delicately place the gold leaf onto the tacky areas. Gently press the leaf onto the surface with a soft brush or your fingertips. The leaf will adhere to the adhesive.

Step 5: Removing Excess: Using a soft brush or a cotton ball, burnish the gold leaf onto the pastel surface. This helps the leaf adhere firmly. Carefully remove excess gold leaf by brushing it away or using a clean, dry brush.

Be cautious, as this process can potentially damage the already drawn details. Therefore, it's advisable to either apply the gold leaf to areas without intricate details or to add the important details after applying the gold leaf.
